An exploratory study of the job satisfaction and educational needs of health care workers working in private homes for the elderly in Hong Kong

1. Job satisfaction was relatively high among health care workers in private homes for the elderly.
2. Job satisfaction was associated with levels of work pressure, intention to remain in current employment, and personal health.
3. There was a discrepancy between the perceived need for work-related skills and the level of acquisition of those skills in daily practice.
4. Elderly home health care wo rkers wanted education on general health care, common illnesses in the elderly, the psychology of the elderly, emergency care, and communication skills.
